Welcome to the Mount Alexander region.
The Mount Alexander Shire is situated just 120 kilometres north-west of Melbourne via the Calder highway. The major towns of Castlemaine and Maldon are renowned for their gold mining heritage as well as their streetscapes and building styles The many small towns and settlements in the region also display their rich past from the roaring days of the early Victorian Gold Rushes.
Set amid rolling hills and a labyrinth of valleys and gullies, you’ll sense an air of discovery as you travel through small townships in the region including Chewton, Fryerstown, Guildford, Harcourt, Newstead, Taradale and Vaughan.
The region is now known for its developed tastes. It is renowned for its pursuit of the arts and has become home to hundreds of practicing artists. Great food and wine experiences are a highlight in the region, with sidewalk dining, cafes and choice wineries.
